Oh coffee, one’s true love! Enter a coffee shop 8:30am any day of the week and you’ll be met by a very long and tired que of morning commuters, eagerly awaiting their first caffeine fix of the day. There’s no doubt about it, we are hooked. Not only is coffee loved for its distinct flavour and the instant buzz it provides, it has also become somewhat of a trend influenced by celebrities, social media platforms and café culture. But we want to show you why it’s great for your health as well as for your taste buds and aesthetically cool Instagram feed:
It is great for the brain – Coffee is loaded with powerful antioxidants. Studies suggest coffee consumption can help slow the rate of age-related cognitive decline and degenerative diseases.
It reduces the risk of Parkinson’s – A collection of epidemiologic studies have indicated a link between regular coffee consumption and a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.
It protects your liver – Drinking two cups a day can help cut the risks of developing liver cirrhosis by 40%. Cirrhosis is a complication of liver disease which involves loss of liver cells and liver scarring.
It decreases the likelihood of depression – In 2013 researcher’s analysed 14-year -old data from over 200,000 subjects and found that those who drank 2-4 cups of coffee per day were 50% less likely to commit suicide than those who drank less or stuck to decaf.
Can improve athletic performance – Caffeine is known to make athletes train harder and for longer. It stimulates the brain, helps us to focus and also breaks down fatty acids into the bloodstream which are then used as fuel.
Its speeds up your metabolism by 10% – caffeine helps the body to burn fat more efficiently.
So now if ever confronted by a non-believer (there are some out there, gasp), we can all justify our addiction with a long list of noteworthy facts! Hurrah! And, if you ever fancy making your coffee extra snazzy, we suggest adding in a scoop of our vanilla ice cream to create the most divine sugar free affogato!
