All our body and cognitive functions are affected by our breath. It helps us function optimally, clears the mind and helps us feel balanced and in control. They say that life starts with an inhale and ends with an exhale, so there must be something almost transcendent given to us with this act. That is why it is worth it to give it a thought and learn how to use it well, so that we live and feel at our best.
Deep breathing is as important for achieving good sports results, as for thinking clearly. Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth, the general rule goes. What some people do, however, is the so-called shallow breathing – fast and high into the chest. It reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your cells, depriving them of the full benefits of this free and healthy practice given to each of us for optimal health.
Furthermore, the slow, deep breathing not only provides us with the full benefits of oxygen, but is also relaxes the nervous system. To check if you are doing it right, lay on your back, place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. When you inhale, your belly should rise, but not your chest.
Some useful tips:
- inhaling longer than exhaling energises the body, while the reverse relaxes it;
- when stressed, focus your attention on breathing with the same count – brings balance to the mind;
- before beginning your meal, take a few deep breaths through the nose, exhaling through the mouth in order to relax and bring some blood supply and oxygen to the stomach for optimal digestion.
